APOCALYPTIC
RUNNER

Apocalyptic Runner was a solo UX-focused project aimed at increasing motivation and engagement in running.

This gamified running app prototype turns fitness into a survival challenge, where maintaining speed and consistency is the key to staying alive. Users must outrun zombies, collect supplies, and build their base. Slowing down or neglecting their base results in in-game death and lost progress, driving continued engagement in a thrilling, game driven fitness experience.

To encourage consistent running, users must regularly head out running to gather supplies, which are essential for maintain and upgrading their base’s heath, defence, and morale.

While running, users automatically collect supplies to use later, but if they slow down below their target pace, they risk being attacked by zombies and losing game progress!

Since this project was UX-focused, user needs were prioritised throughout the design process. This led to the prototype being developed for both smartphones and running watches, ensuring accessibility across different devices. The dark colour scheme was also chosen with users in mind, preventing sudden brightness that could disrupt their run.

Beyond its game driven mechanics, the prototype also incorporates social features, including run posts, messaging, and base trading, creating a connected and engaging experience.
